How long does tREATMENT/Therapy take?
It depends on which model you agree with - the illness model or the wellness model:
The illness model - going to therapy is like going to a physician. If all you want out of therapy is to be symptom free, then as soon as you reach that goal in therapy, you are done. Under a Mental Health Care/Treatment plan, a GP usually refers you for an initial course of treatment for 6 sessions.
The wellness model - going to therapy is like going to the gym. You go to therapy because you want to make a good life better and to reach your full potential. This model focuses on mental wellness and prevention.
You may find that after you attend therapy through the lenses of the illness model, you may stay as you discover the benefits of the wellness model. This would be for relapse prevention and maintenance of skills/strategies gained.
Regarding frequency of appointments, it is recommended that early on, your appointments are closer together, then spaced out later on. This is dependent on your presenting concerns, but generally, weekly -> fortnightly -> monthly/more.
